Eating Disorders Clinics

The Diet Cure Program

Solving the Underlying Causes of

  • Food Craving
  • Carbohydrate Addiction
  • Emotional Overeating
  • Other Eating and Dieting Disorders

What keeps us eating unhealthy foods and hating our bodies?

  • Weak will power? No
  • Psychological problems? No
  • The wrong low-calorie diets? No
  • Addictive FoodsAddictive Foods? Yes
  • Low-Calorie Diets? Yes
  • Appetite Chemistry Deficits? Yes

ADDICTIVE FOODS:
Scientists have confirmed what millions of Americans have learned the hard way: Some foods contain elements that are literally as addictive as alcohol or hard drugs!
Reference: "Sugar as Addictive as Cocaine"
Reference: "Evidence That Intermittent, Excessive Sugar Intake Causes Endogenous Opioid Dependence"

The Diet Cure Program breaks these addictions easily.

LOW-CALORIE DIETING has a 97% failure rate!
Yet it has been our only weapon against our ever-increasing weight problem. More than 80% of those who start weight-loss programs drop out for two reasons:

  1. They can't stop eating high-carb foods, or
  2. They can't lose weight, even though they stick to their diets.

After years or decades of yo-yo dieting, many who come to our clinic have severe nutrient deficiencies that have led to ever-increasing rebound cravings and weight gain AND significant mood and health impairment. They need to be cured of dieting!

APPETITE-CHEMISTRY DEFICITS:
Low-cal diets, skipped meals, carb/sugar excess, purging, over-exercise, and too much stress, deplete our brains' most potent appetite-and-mood-regulating neurotransmitters: serotonin and endorphin. This triggers craving for drug-like sweets and starches for temporary comfort. Brain-targeted nutrients called amino acids can quickly cancel these problems.

ABOUT THE CLINIC'S WORK WITH EATING PROBLEMS

Our Clinic director and the author of the bestselling The Diet Cure, Julia Ross, founded the clinic in 1988. It was the first program in the country to provide complete holistic treatment for eating problems and the first in the area to treat food as an addictive substance. Since then we have provided this program successfully to thousands of people from all over the country. THE DIET CURE (Penguin 2000), based on our clinic's breakthrough treatment methods, has sold over 100,000 copies in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. Click here for typical reader comments.

Our clinic's purpose is to provide a systematic and intensive program of nutrient therapy and biochemical rebalancing to correct those brain and body imbalances that are specific to people with cravings for refined sweets and starches, a history of yo-yo dieting, bulimia, and other eating disorders.

Eating

A Holistic Approach-What to Expect

When the clinic opened, an understanding of the role of brain and body chemistry imbalances in triggering overpowering food cravings, mood problems, and compulsive behaviors was just emerging. Since then, interest in the biochemical roots of eating problems has increased tremendously, but ours remains the only program that addresses all those biochemical roots with effective nutritional strategies.

Like other programs, ours explores the role of emotional and spiritual factors in food-related issues. But we are unique in that we address our clients' physiological needs as our primary target. We tailor nutrient supplementation and therapeutic whole food diets, along with specialized lab testing and holistic medical care to each client. This effectively eliminates the malnutrition, neurotransmitter deficits, blood sugar problems, and hormonal or other imbalances that lie at the center of eating problems. In fact, when these biochemical roadblocks are ignored in conventional programs, full recovery becomes almost impossible.

We begin by correcting deficiencies in the brain's neurotransmitter production using targeted amino acids that naturally raise brain levels of serotonin, endorphin, and other powerful appetite-and-mood regulators. This specialized nutritional therapy eliminates food cravings, emotional overeating and bingeing and purging, typically within a few days.

ASSESSING THE NEED FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY, ANTI-DEPRESSANT MEDICATION OR OTHER SUPPORT

The depression, anxiety, irritability, over-sensitivity, low self-esteem and negative obsessions about body size that drive so many of our clients to overeat, purge, or restrict, typically respond very quickly to nutritional therapy.

We thoroughly evaluate the psychological needs of our clients through extensive individual assessment (and family assessment when needed.) Our initial workups and detailed history-taking allow us to identify psychological issues that need attention and to make appropriate treatment plans and referrals. Many of our clients have done extensive psychotherapy already, but we sometimes find that sustained relief from overeating or other eating disorders, often experienced for the first time in our program, allows clients new access to memories and feelings that may need to be processed. Their new, nutritionally-bolstered mood stability gives them greater strength and clarity for engaging in this often painful work, if it is needed.

Most of our clients find that their need for antidepressant medication is eliminated by the brain-targeted nutrient supplements. They are then able to successfully and comfortably withdraw from these drugs. However, we support the use of these medicines for as long as they are needed. If clients do decide to taper off antidepressants or other medications, they are monitored by their own prescribing physician and their withdrawal is very carefully monitored. (See The Mood Cure Program.)

MORE SPECIALIZED MEDICAL CARE
For deeper imbalances, such as metabolic slowdown, digestive distress, or the sex-hormone-related cravings and mood problems of menopause, we add laboratory testing and holistic medical care to our nutritional therapies.

LOW WEIGHT?
If you are at an extremely low weight, we will need to have you get us the results of a special medical assessment before you come in to make sure that our out-patient program is a safe option, and to assess the need for a referral to more intensive in-patient care or regular medical monitoring while in our program.

"I am 59 years old. I have had eating disorders for 38 years. (Mostly bulimia.) After bingeing, I would pass out. I would feel angry at myself and depressed. I was very stressed (I also have always had a stressful job environment.) I would try to resist the sweets but once I started, I couldn't stop. I also had headaches every day and gained quite a bit of weight.

Veggies Two years ago I went to Recovery Systems and it has literally changed my life. Over the 38 years I spent time with various therapists and did lots of research on eating disorders, but could not quit for long periods of time. I always felt "lacking" because I thought it was a matter of weak willpower.

Now, I have lost my craving for sweets, do not have headaches, and am not really hungry. My weight stabilized at 20 pounds below where it was (which is a good normal weight for me.) I do not have mood swings, and have even learned not to be a workaholic. My sense of humor has returned and I married a wonderful man a year ago.

FoodNow I am able to choose healthy foods, and always eat enough so that I am full without weight problems. I don't have any craving for sugar or carbohydrates. This is a miracle!"

"When I came to the clinic I was depressed, joyless, exhausted, sleepless, and at an all-time weight high of 220 despite daily laxative abuse. My PMS cravings and bingeing went on for two full weeks per month and were totally out of control.

Starting in week one, on therapeutic nutrients and a wholesome diet (with no caloric restrictions), I have now experienced six months totally binge-free and a twenty pound weight loss. Even the holidays this year were no problem for me. Zero laxatives, good energy and sleep, and a great mood. I no longer obsess about my weight."
